How to Salt a Margarita Glass

Mon, 05/19/2008

In addition to the all the normal ingredients there are two prerequisites to a tasty margarita:

1. Hot weather I just don’t understand people who drink frozen margaritas when it’s cold outside.

2. A well salted rim Don’t get me started on people who either don’t salt the rims of their margarita glasses or use a combination of salt and sugar on the rims of their glasses. Those people are, in a word, wrong.

The procedure for properly salting a margarita glass is so dead simple it’s almost silly to have a how to. However, the frequency in which I’ve encountered un or badly salted rims, particularly at parties (time to step it up home bartenders!) tells me that writing down the proper procedure is a good idea.

Requirements:
- Glass margarita glass, no plastic cups please
- Plate or saucer large enough to hold the entire rim of the margarita glass
- Coarse Salt (No, your table salt won't do)
- Lime wedges

Procedure:
- Pour salt on plate. Pour more than you think you’ll need.
- Firmly rub the flesh of the lime wedge around the rim of the glass.
- Dip the moistened rim of the glass into the salt. Rotate the glass in the salt a couple times to achieve good coverage.
- Fill glass with a tasty margarita.
- Drink and be happy.
